For those who want to see it for themselves, Holyrood Palace appears in its organic role as the historic site of official accommodation for British monarchs during their visit to Scotland.
In keeping with tradition dating back to the 15th century, Holyrood Palace, (a much-distorted Haly Ruid, meaning ‘holy cross’), is used today to host Charles III.
The walls of Holyrood remember many monarchs. The Renaissance-style palace was built by its first king, James IV in 1501. Then Mary Stuart lived there (the interior of her chambers are still intact in the building) and later, a disgraced Charles X lived in the palace.
