Edinburgh’s aristocracy dates back to the 6th century when Aideen, a royal family of Britons, built a tower fortress.
Edinburgh’s most famous titled aristocrats are its Dukes – throughout the city’s long history there have been six persons in three creations and nine men in succession who have been honoured with this British title.
The aristocratic title has been in use since the 18th century. Today, Prince Edward (Earl of Wessex) is in line to receive it.
The first titled aristocrats in the history of the town were:
- Frederick (1726-1751).
- George of Edinburgh (1751-1760).
The title was specially created by King George I of Great Britain for his grandson Frederick – the monarch ensured special status for the future Prince of Wales.
