In the county of Angus in Scotland there is Glamis Castle. The rooms and corridors have “sheltered” many ghosts. In ancient times the building was equipped as a hunting lodge where in 1034 the wounded King Malcolm II died. “The Destroyer” lived for 40 years, punished by fate for the murder of Kenneth III, the previous ruler of Scottish lands. Princess Margaret was born in the castle much later, in the 19th century. The first ghost appeared there in the 15th century – Earl Crawford wanted to play cards with the devil himself. A stranger in a mask dressed in a dark cloak appeared in the castle and the game began. The earl lost his soul and the ghostly guest disappeared. A few years later Crawford died and strange things began to happen in Glamis – the slap of playing cards on the table and curses spewed by invisible people were heard. It came to walling up the room where the earl and the devil had played.

Wars between clans in Europe were frequent on the Middle Ages. This also affected Scotland. People of the Ogilvy clan hid in Glamis Castle, but they were deceived by John, the third lord of the Lyons. He placed the fugitives in a secret room, then walled it up. Screams and groans were heard from there for a long time, then the people died of thirst and hunger. But strange sounds continued from there for several years! They dismantled the stonework then and found skeletons in the room. They walled up the openings again and left it that way.
At one time, Jacob V, the next king of Scotland, lived a luxurious life in Glamis Castle. He spent time in his adolescence in prison, sent there by the Earl of Angus. At the age of 16 he drove the Douglases abroad. Janet, the owner of Glamis Castle, remained in her homeland with her husband and son. Jacob V sent them to prison in Edinburgh, accusing the woman of witchcraft despite the fact that he was her grandfather. In 1537 Janet was burned at the stake by order of the Scottish king. Since then the Grey Lady, the ghost of a burned woman, has wandered around Glamis Castle. She visits the chapel there, praying on her knees. The spirit of a black boy, a former servant of one of the owners of the castle, lives in Glamis. The mistress died and the boy was forced to kneel near her bedroom. He also died, not daring to leave the appointed place.
In the vicinity of a Scottish castle, “a woman without a tongue wanders.” This ghost is encountered at night and its story is as follows: a Scottish woman was punished, her tongue was cut out – she was too talkative. She died, and a ghost appeared, not daring to leave her native penates and in the windows of the castle at night the ghost of a knight looks in, frightening the guests who have settled there for a while. This has been happening for centuries, the building is considered the most mystical in Scotland. Majestic in appearance, it guards its age-old secrets and light-brown walls and towers, covered with grey conical domes from above and sculptures of lions in each room of the castle create a gloomy mood. Now the refuge of aristocrats, it is open to tourists.
