The aristocracy of Scotland has been represented by clan scions and clan communities since the 14th century. The family name has been passed on from the father (with very few exceptions!) and the clan is united by one common ancestor, a chief. A characteristic feature of clan aristocracy in Scotland is considered to be the official structure which is recognised by the Court of Lyon.
