East Lothian: the county where Scotland’s flag was invented
Midlothian, West Lothian and East Lothian are three administrative units spread over the same historic territory of Lothian, named in honour of King Lot. It is said that this south-eastern region of Scotland, which never spoke Gaelic, “gave birth” to the official national symbol of the Scottish people back in 823.
According to legend, the story goes like this. In one of the royal towns of the county, in Haddington, there was another battle: ancient Celtic-speaking Picts and ancient Germanic tribes of Angles clashed. The battle ended with the victory of the latter and the creation of the flag, which since the 10th century passed to the monarchs of Scotland.
